Dr. Baker was talking about 3 Myths for Breast Procedures
Many women feel that their breast size is somewhat inadequate in proportion to their overall figure. This is especially true in thin, athletic women and any woman after pregnancy. Often, the most effective way to correct this condition is breast augmentation with either saline-filled or silicone gel-filled breast implants. Indeed, breast augmentation has become one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States. The size, shape, and position of the implant must be specifically selected based on careful examination of each individual patient's anatomy. One type of breast augmentation and one type of breast implant will not give the most natural and attractive result in every woman. The key principle is to employ the correct implant and the appropriate augmentation technique for the specific needs of each patient.
Over time, both the nipple and the breast mound may descend on the chest wall producing a drooping (ptotic) appearance of the breasts. This drooping may be exacerbated by significant weight loss or post-partum alterations of the breast. The most effective method of correcting this change in the breast appearance is the breast lift procedure called a mastopexy. The breast lift is accomplished by surgically repositioning the nipple and the breast mound into a higher, more youthful position on the chest wall. Excess skin and soft tissue may be removed at the same time to improve the appearance and durability of the result. Recently, efforts have been made to reduce the length of the scars resulting from breast lift surgery which have been quite successful in selected patients.

Occasionally, the sagging of the nipple and areola is accompanied by loss of breast volume. This can happen when the breast tissue atrophies, especially after breast feeding. In these cases of nipple sagging and volume loss, we may combine nipple lift (mastopexy) with placement of an appropriately sized implant (augmentation). We call this procedure augmentation - mastopexy.
